Emancipation Day Celebration

Emancipation Day CelebrationInspired by Juneteenth, Emancipation Day is a 2 day event that will use the elements of art, fashion, music, and the power of words to celebrate and pay homage to those who’ve suffered, died, struggled, and succeeded in the name of freedom. The creative and artistically charged event was created with intent to develop solutions regarding the long standing psychological, social, and economic challenges that continue to plague our communities as the result of years of oppression, discrimination, and bondage. The creators of Emancipation day aspire to provoke thought and action-bound dialogue needed to instigate freedom in the greatest sense of the word.

On the 4th of July, we take to the parks and fields, and light fireworks to the air. On Christmas Day, we exchange gifts of abundance even if it exhausts our bank accounts. On Thanksgiving Day, we carry on the traditions rooted in the history of The Pilgrims. But when it comes to paying homage to the plight and liberation of our African ancestors and their descendants, the enthusiasm and celebrations are often lackluster as a collective… Something is terribly wrong with this picture. There is a disconnect within our communities and the ramifications of that disconnect will continue to multiply. We cannot continue to do what we have always done while demanding “change” for the better. Freedom is more than just a physical declaration. Freedom is the complete ownership of one’s own mind. Greater than the release of shackled flesh, freedom is to have the courage, desire, and wisdom to question, seek, and find. It is to walk alongside or to be lead by a conscience with intent to tap into the divine, the wonder, the beauty, the mystery and the greatness within, around, and beyond. Freedom can never be attained through conformity, fear, ignorance, complacency, or assimilation. For he who blindly accepts that which lies before him in a world of lies agreed upon is one who will live in perhaps the worst type of bondage…the shackled mind.
